Raphaella Beatrice Spence was born in London (England) in 1978.
Her family traveled to France where she spent the first eight years of her life.When they returned to London she continued her studies and her interest in art began to emerge. Her initial production of works were still life paintings. At age twelve her family moved definitively to Italy where she completed her studies at the St. George's British International School (SGBIS). Influenced by views of the Umbrian countryside, Spence turned toward the creation of hyperrealistic landscapes and concentrated on developing her technical skills. In 2000 she held her first solo exhibition in Italy, obtaining public recognition and that of the critics and in 2003 she exhibited in her first solo exhibition in the United States at the Bernarducci.Meisel.Gallery in New York. During that same year Spence also participated in, “Iperrealisti”, her first major museum exhibition venue at the Chiostro Del Bramante in Rome, Italy. Since then Spence has held 9 solo exhibitions between New York and London and her works have been included in 23 museum exhibitions and over 80 group exhibitions around the world.
In 1999 Spence met her partner Roberto Bernardi, also a hyperrealist artist, with whom she occasionally creates series of big sized paintings painted together representing social scenes such as crowds at football stadiums, executed with incredible skill and attention to detail.
Since 2012 Spence has been taking part in an international museum tour on Hyperrealism which started at the Kunsthalle Tübingen Museum in Germany and has continued with over 13 museum venues worldwide. This traveling show has been on view at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (Spain), the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (England), New Orleans Museum Of Art, (U.S.A.), Oklahoma City Museum Of Art (U.S.A), Museo De Bellas Artes De Bilbao (Spain), Kunsthal Museum Rotterdam (Netherlands), Tampa Museum Of Art (U.S.A.) and many more.
Spence has received critical recognition for her work in widely circulated newspapers and magazines.
